A blog from Myles Binford, the Founder of Pür Detox and Pür Recovery:

I recently noticed that quite a few programs are calling themselves holistic. I looked into this further and realized that I was expecting programs to be more ORGANIC (drug free) when they said HOLISTIC.

Let me explain. Holism and organic are not the same thing. A treatment program can call itself holistic if they address the mind and body. Here is a definition from Merriam-Webster:

Definition of HOLISTIC
1 : of or relating to holism
2 : relating to or concerned with wholes or with complete systems rather than with the analysis of, treatment of, or dissection into parts.

Examples of HOLISTIC
  1. Holistic medicine attempts to treat both the mind and the body.
  2. We need to take a more holistic approach to improving our schools.
  3. In a world of specialization, we have been trained to think of medicine as a separate world—when we are sick, we go to doctors and follow their advice. This is starting to change, with the increasing popularity of alternative and holistic approaches to overall health and well-being. —Gareth Cook, Boston Globe, 9 June 2002

From this you can see that any program that addresses the physical body and uses drugs or other means to help handle addiction and behaviors can be considered holistic. However, that to me, meant something different which other people have told me they misunderstood as well.

My approach is different. I developed an Organic Program to get people off drugs entirely. I don't think people were born with Xanax, Wellbutrin or Oxycontin deficiencies and those drugs tend to be more of a mental straight jacket than a solution to why someone used drugs or alcohol as a solution in the first place. Let me explain further. People tend to think drugs are the problem. Well, they've become the problem. The REAL problem existed before the addiction and is the reason why drugs became a solution to that problem. I could talk all day on this subject, so for now, I'll just make it short.

So, if someone was looking for an ORGANIC (drug free) program, meaning they would get off drugs entirely and ended up in a HOLISTIC program, they still may be put on drugs, due to the drug treatment approach. Some feel addiction is a disease and with that viewpoint, tend to treat this so called disease with drugs. Yet, they are only treating symptoms. Symptoms are not causes. If you treat a cause then the symptoms disappear.

So, that's a little tidbit of info for you in your search for a home detox program. Make sure you understand the difference in what you are looking for. By the way, my facilities are full of people who have been through multiple rehabs and detoxes who finally ended up with us to finally get off all the drugs the other "holistic" rehabs used to treat them.
